José Manuel Rodriguez Delgado was a Spanish professor of physiology at Yale University. He is best known for his research into electrically stimulating certain regions of the brain to alter the subject's behaviour.

Experiments Edit

José Delgado conducted several research experiments on test subjects, including cats, monkeys, bulls and humans. The most widely publicized of these was a bull at Cordoba Ranch. By way of a device called a 'stimoceiver' implanted into the bull's brain, Delgado was able to stop and start the bull's aggressive tendencies. Delgado effectively had remote control over the bull's emotions.[1][2]

On individuality Edit

José Delgado held controversial views on common individuality, insisting that the average person does not have the right to govern his/her own mind.

"The individual may think that the most important reality is his own existence, but this is only his personal point of view. This lacks historical perspective. Man does not have the right to develop his own mind. This kind of liberal orientation has great appeal. We must electronically control the brain. Someday armies and generals will be controlled by electric stimulation of the brain." - Yale University Medical School Congressional Record, No. 26, Vol. 118 February 24, 1974
